Before the carnival begins, the Great Doge, the ruler of Venice, receives an invitation from two noble houses competing for his favour. Going to one of the invitees, the Doge is unaware that everyone in his entourage is bribed by the nobility and leads him to the highest bidder. In addition to them, the Doge is intrigued by his favourite, who can destroy his reputation in a fit of jealousy.
