Mercerisation In mercerisation, threads are treated with a strong lye solution. In the presence of caustic soda, the cellulose molecules swell and the empty spaces disappear. If the yarn is stretched in this state, the fibres press against each other and create a smooth and shiny surface. Yarn mercerisation increases the strength of the yarns, enhances their lustre and increases the perception of the dye by the cotton. The result is shiny, strong yarns in rich colours.

Double mercerisation Some manufacturers indicate that the product has been subjected to double mercerisation and therefore improved its properties. Technologically it is possible, but laboratory tests of JSC "PNK IM. KIROVA" have shown that repeated mercerisation does not change the properties of threads in any way.
